LAND ROVER DEMONSTRATES AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE CAPABILITY IN AMSTERDAM

Transport and Environment Ministers from 28 EU Member States, all of whom were representing the EU Council of Ministers, were among those to witness the range of autonomous vehicle technologies being demonstrated, including hands free driving.

Two Range Rover Sport vehicles were present, one demoing Remote Control technology, which allows a driver to control a vehicle externally, and another demonstrating Hands Free technology, which keeps the vehicle in lane and will perform a highway lane change and overtake when the driver indicates.

Jaguar Land Rover’s research into how a vehicle could connect to a road network authority to regulate its speed according to the conditions will be core to this demonstration.

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “We are all working on exciting autonomous driving technologies. To successfully deliver these technologies, industry needs a common approach between carmakers, mobile telecom providers and providers of roadside infrastructure systems.

“This will allow standardisation and harmonisation, enabling cars to communicate with each other and the roadside infrastructure around them efficiently and effectively. It allows Jaguar Land Rover to deliver technologies that are relevant, accessible and affordable to customers”

Shown in a real world environment, over 15.5km, the demonstration of technology allowed EU ministers to understand the importance of standardisation between other vehicles and roadside infrastructure.

THE LAST OVERLAND: REMAKING HISTORY THROUGH A 10,000 MILE ROAD EXPEDITION FROM SINGAPORE TO LONDON

Between 1955 and 1956, a team of six young men embarked on The Oxford & Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition (The First Overland), and made history by being the first to successfully drive the 10,000 miles from London to Singapore. Now, 64 years later, a member from that first expedition, Tim Slessor (age 87) joined by award-winning film-maker, Alex Bescoby (age 31), will take the original 1955 ‘Oxford Land Rover Series I on a road journey to retrace that first overland expedition.
